A conversation about Wisdom || Estela Saelo

Hey masterpiece family, this month we've been looking at the meaning of wisdom and exploring what the Bible says about it. I had a conversation with Estela Saelo about what it means to be wise and have wisdom in your life.

Estela is a Christian Youtuber and Blogger (@womanofvirtue_ on instagram). She is also a student at the university of Portsmouth, and likes make up, fashion & the Word of God!

What does Wisdom mean to you?

For me, wisdom is the ability to discern, understand, listen and be humble. “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom” (James 3:13) So wisdom is not just about intelligence or the amount of knowledge one has, but the ability to use those in a way that is beneficial with sound judgement.

How do you know when you have wisdom?

You know you have wisdom when you fear the Lord, because all pure and perfect wisdom comes from Him. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise” (Psalms 111:10). God has given us different stories in the Bible where people used wisdom (like Jesus) or when people went off their own understanding (like Abraham). You know you have wisdom when you seek wisdom from the Word of God and His teachings. I think that you can never get “enough” wisdom but constantly seeking it from God and praying to get more is one of the best acts of humility you could ever do.

What advice would you give to a fellow believer who wants to make better decisions but doesn't know where to start?

My advice to you is: CHILL! Because nobody has it all figured out. But here is the good news: you can have it all figured out with Jesus by your side. Start by turning to God at all times. He wants to be a part of every decision you make in your life. I know life is difficult sometimes, but Proverbs was very clear: “Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6) You don’t know where to start? Start with His word, because God IS His word.

What advice would you give to someone when it comes to guarding their heart?

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23) From the heart flows everything that is within us: thoughts, desires…etc. Store up God’s word in your heart so that everything that you think, want and desire is Godly. “Your word I have stored up in my heart, that I may not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). God advises us to guard our hearts for that same reason! He knows that whatever is stored up in your heart will eventually come out one way or another. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34) And when words come out, actions follow. Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, God has given us His assistance so that our heart is protected at all times! There are certain decisions in your life that you wish you never did because you didn’t wait and listen to what God had to say. And when you realised, your heart was already damaged.

How do you ensure the Wisdom of God is present in your life?

Seek wise counsel, have like-minded people around you that will keep you accountable of things and keep on studying the word of God which is the fountain of all wisdom. Studying the word of God by yourself is great but being able to share your experiences and struggles with other Christians is very important as you can learn from other people’s mistakes and advice. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Pray for a mentor that will help you on your walk. The body of Christ is rich in wisdom and we are all here for each other!
